Detention Officer Applicants Must (Qualifications):

  • Be at least 19 years of age,
  • Be a United States Citizen,
  • Be a High School Graduate or possess a GED,
  • No convictions for felonies or misdemeanor offenses involving moral turpitude,
  • Must have a valid Georgia Driver's License,
  • Successfully demonstrate the minimal literacy skills required for the position,

The Position as a Detention Officer Offers (Benefits):

  • Annual starting base salary has been increased to: $ 38,502 (with no experience). Georgia certified Detention Officers starting salary may be higher depending on experience.
  • In-rank step increases available based on length of service and upon completion of job related training,

Application and Pre-Employment Procedure Includes (Selection):



  • Our agency works eight hour shifts (five days on and two days off)
  • Shift assignment and days off are based on agency seniority
  • Most new hires start on the evening shift (3 PM to 11 PM)
  • Shifts and/or days off do not rotate
  • New employees are on probation for one year
  • Must work weekends and holidays if they do not occur on your regular day off


  • If you have ever been arrested, you must provide the actual police report and the official court disposition records with application. No exceptions.
  • If there is no police report due to time frame, you will need a written statement on the arresting agency's letterhead indicating why there is no police report.
  • The Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (Georgia P.O.S.T.) will reject your application if the above is not included, preventing you from being considered for law enforcement/corrections employment opportunities.
  • Return all requested documents with your application in person or by US mail to the Henry County Sheriff's Office attention Special Investigations Unit.
  • Failure to submit the required information/documents will result in application disqualification.
  • Submission of application in no way assures you a position within the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

Background Check

  • Must take pre-employment written assessment test that assesses your basic reading, writing and math skills.
  • Applicants passing test will be given a 43 page Background Investigation Questionnaire.
  • Must pass extensive background investigation which includes, but is not limited to:
    • Check of the applicant's work history;
    • Drivers history;
    • Criminal history;
    • Military records check;
    • Check of applicants references;
    • P.O.S.T. history (if applicable). Out of state law enforcement must provide Letter of Good Standing from employer and state P.O.S.T. records;
    • Polygraph/Psychological/Medical examinations.
  • Any attempt to conceal or misrepresent information during the hiring process will result in immediate disqualification of the applicant.
  • The hiring process takes approximately 2 to 3 months to complete.
