Identity Theft, Fraud or Misuse of Social Securtity Number

Today, many people are faced with the often terrifying issue of Identity Theft.  The definition of identity theft includes three general types of incidents:

  • unauthorized use or attempted use of existing credit cards,
  • unauthorized use or attempted use of existing accounts, such as checking accounts,
  • misuse of personal information to obtain new accounts or loans, or to commit other crimes.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2010, 7% of households in the United States (or about 8.6 million households) had at least one member age 12 or older who experienced one or more types of identity theft victimization.

How do I report identity theft, fraud or misuse of my Social Security Number?

  1. Place a fraud alert on your credit file or freeze your credit by contacting one of the three credit bureaus.  You can call the numbers listed below or click on the company logo located to the left of this page to link to their website.  The company you contact is required to contact the other two, which will then place an alert on their versions of your report.

  • Equifax - 1-800-525-6285

  • Trans Union - 1-800-680-7289

  • Experian - 1-888-397-3742

  1. Review your credit report for inquiries from companies you have not contacted; accounts you did not open; and debts on your account that you cannot explain.

  2. Close any accounts you know, or believe have been tampered with or open fraudulently.

  3. File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.

  4. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online at www.ftc.gov or by calling them at 1-877-438-4338.
